GUWAHATI: APCC president and deputy leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi said that speaking on the floor of an assembly and in a poll rally should differ from each other.
Gogoi did observe the proceedings of the one-day Assam Assembly session from the Speaker’s gallery yesterday. Speaking to the media on that today, he said, “There is a significant difference between speaking on the floor of a sacred Legislative Assembly and delivering a speech at a political party’s public rally. On the sacred floor of the Assembly, it is not appropriate for us, as people’s representatives, to make casual or frivolous political remarks. The house has an exclusive dignity of its own. Within its premises, our speech should not be guided by narrow political ideologies but should align with the Constitution. Moreover, those who hold constitutional positions carry added responsibility and accountability.”
He said, “However, yesterday I observed that some individuals seemed unable to differentiate between a political party’s election rally and the sacred floor of the Legislative Assembly! Perhaps they believed they were not in the Assembly but speaking at a party rally or political gathering. That may be why they made certain statements. The sacred floor of the Assembly and constitutional positions always carry a special status and seriousness. It seems some people have failed to grasp this properly.”
He further said, “I myself am the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. I have experience on the sacred floor of the Lok Sabha as well. In the Lok Sabha, many senior ministers of the central government and senior BJP leaders speak. But they do not bring all the comments they make at party rallies or election meetings into the floor of the Lok Sabha. They understand the decorum, dignity, and gravity of the House. Unfortunately, I feel disappointed that there are certain individuals in Assam who fail to understand this distinction. This is truly unfortunate for our parliamentary democratic tradition.”
