Guwahati: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi has welcomed the decision to rename the Dibrugarh airport after legendary cultural icon Dr Bhupen Hazarika. However, he expressed concerns over the lack of adequate air connectivity from Dibrugarh, especially during evening hours.

Gogoi was at the Assam Legislative Assembly on Monday to observe proceedings during a crucial one-day session. Speaking to the media, he said, “Today is a very important day for us. Tourists will now see and know the Sudhakantha’s name after the renaming of Dibrugarh airport is done.”

He also informed that Congress Legislative Party leader Debabrata Saikia raised the issue in the House and suggested several measures to keep the legacy of Dr Bhupen Hazarika alive.

Addressing political issues, Gogoi said, “Politics will continue both inside and outside the Assembly, and we are ready to give our answers accordingly. People of Assam want to live in peace and harmony. The Congress party has a significant role to play in ensuring that. We must act as the safeguard of the Constitution and democracy. If we work sincerely for the people, they will definitely give us another opportunity to serve.”

Anticipating political attacks in the run-up to the elections, Gogoi added, “The BJP’s IT cells and trollers will say many things about me and my party in the coming year. But eventually, the public will judge. They will have to decide whether they want to stand with a troller party or a party that is committed to making Assam better.”
