State Education Department Upgraded Ten Institutions as Degree Colleges

GUWAHATI: The State Education Department has upgraded as many as ten provincialized colleges to model degree colleges and distributed Rs 1.8 crore to each of them.

Speaking as a meeting of the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha, Assam (RUSA) at Kahilipara here on Monday, State Education Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya said: “This government lays more stress on improving the value of education, and no other government in the past released funds on this head as this government is doing. While providing funds to the colleges in accordance with their needs and efficiency utmost transparency is being maintained. The submission of utilization certificates on the use of central funds that come on the education on time paves the way for the release of more central funds.”

The ten colleges that have been upgraded as model degree colleges are Bengtol College, Goreswar College, Gossaingaon College, Habraghat College, Jengraimukh College, Kherejkhat College, Murkongselek College, Nehru College, Madhya Kamrup College and Udalguri College. Because of the model code of conduct for the by-poll in enforce now, no funds could be given to Madhya Kamrup College. The minister distributed Rs 1.8 crore to each of the nine other colleges in cheques at the meeting.

Present at the meeting were Dr. Mihir Kanti Choudhury, adviser to the Education Department of Assam, Additional Chief Secretary of Education Maninder Singh and RUSA Managing Director Dr. Dipak Mazumdar. The minister also inaugurated the new building of RUSA at the meeting.
