State Education Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya Faces Flak From Teachers

GUWAHATI: The Asom Rajyik Prathamik Shikshak Sanmilani (ARPSS) has said that the role of the Education Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya should always be positive in ensuring a healthy educational environment in the State.

Such a statement from the primary teachers’ organization came close on the heels of State Education Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya, in course of argumentation, comparing TET (teachers’ eligibility test) certificates with licences of drivers that need to be renewed after every fixed interval of time.

A statement issued on Sunday by ARPSS president Jibon Chandra Bora and secretary general Ratul Chandra Goswami said: “Teachers won’t tolerate the insults from the minister who, for the sake of argumentation, has compared TET certificates with drivers’ licences. It is the minister’s duty and responsibility to calm the situation by withdrawing his statement.”

According to the two leaders of the teachers’ body, they had a meeting with the Education Minister on June 19, 2018 when the minister assured them of regularizing the services of contractual teachers in phases. “Since TET certificates have a fixed lifespan it is the responsibility of the government to regularize the jobs on contractual teachers before the terms of their certificates expire. Instead of doing that, making light comments on TET certificates of teachers will only make the situation volatile,” Bora said, and added: “We’re going to apprise Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal of the present situation within three days. If need be, we may go for agitation for the regularization of jobs.”
