Supermarket flyover to be opened for road traffic on November 3

GUWAHATI: The Supermarket flyover will be opened for road traffic on November 3, an official of the Public Works Department (PWD) informed. It will be a 1.21 km-long T-shaped flyover on the GS road in the city. The double-lane flyover will connect Dispur to Khanapara and Supermarket to Last Gate in the city. The total project cost of the flyover is Rs. 127.20 crore.

Even as the flyover was scheduled to be completed within 36 months, the flyover construction has been completed in around 18-19 months. According to the project estimate, the construction of the flyover was to be completed in December 2022.

"The construction works of the flyover have almost been completed. More than 300 labourers are working round-the-clock to give a final touch on the construction. We hope the construction will be completed on November 1," Executive Engineer of Dispur PWD Division, Bulu Ranjan Deka said.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is also holding the charge of PWD portfolio, had inspected the construction site of the flyover on the midnight of October 27. According to report, the Chief Minister's convoy passed through the flyover, while he walked over the flyover from Supermarket to Janata Bhavan. Sarma also interacted with the PWD officials and contractor for half an hour and appreciated the officials and appreciated them for completing the flyover before the scheduled time.

PWD assistant executive engineers Biswajit Kalita and Pranjit Talukdar, assistant engineers Roopak Deka and Abu Syed, junior engineer Borhan Ahmed and contractor Anil Das were also present during the Chief Minister's visit to the construction site. The foundation of the flyover was laid on December 8, 2019. The flyover will start in front of the Janata Bhavan at Dispur and end at the Down Town police point. On the other hand, the right-side bifurcation will start from the Dispur Supermarket junction to terminate before the traffic roundabout (Golchakkar) at Last Gate. It will be the longest flyover in the city.

The traffic congestion around the Dispur area during rush hours is surely going to get some breathing space once the flyover is ready. The Supermarket flyover will have three arms — the first towards Ganeshguri, the second from Assam Secretariat towards Down Town Hospital and the third arm will be towards Supermarket. Once completed, the double lane flyover will seamlessly connect Khanapara to Dispur Supermarket, and will make travelling to Last Gate from Ganeshguri faster.

The flyover is being constructed by local contractor Anil Das who is from Mirza. The Chief Minister had stressed using local contractors and engineers for building flyovers and other big projects, the engineer said. "In every block we are trying to showcase the rich heritage and culture of Assam and Northeast," Bulu Ranjan Deka added.

Talking to The Sentinel, contractor Anil Das said, "The flyover has been constucted using modern technology. Due to flyover construction, people face a lot of problems as vehicular movement is diverted. So when the foundation stone of this flyover was laid, I had made up my mind to complete its construction well ahead of the scheduled time and I had planned the schedule accordingly. This flyover construction work would have been completed two months earlier if it had not been for the stir against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in 2019 and the COVID-pandemic in 2020. Due to the COVID lockdown, construction work was stopped for 45 days."
