Guwahati: In a decisive move to reclaim public spaces and ensure pedestrian safety, the Kamrup Metro District Administration, in coordination with the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) and the city police, conducted a surprise footpath clearance drive on Saturday near Don Bosco School in Panbazar. Led by Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Casio Karan Pegu, the operation targeted unauthorized structures and roadside obstructions that had encroached upon pedestrian pathways. Several illegal stalls and makeshift setups were dismantled during the drive, restoring vital footpath space for daily commuters and schoolgoers.
The joint effort comes as part of a larger initiative by the district administration to enhance accessibility and cleanliness in Guwahati’s congested areas. Officials on-site emphasized that such obstructions pose safety hazards, particularly around educational institutions and high-traffic zones.
“This is a step toward ensuring that public footpaths remain free for pedestrian use. Encroachments not only block movement but also compromise public safety,” said a senior GMC official.
Authorities have issued a clear warning that similar enforcement actions will continue across other parts of the city. The administration has urged vendors and individuals to cooperate and refrain from occupying public walkways illegally.
