Guwahati: Gauhati University, one of Assam’s most prestigious educational institutions in the Northeast, found itself embroiled in controversy on Thursday as administrative decisions and student protests took centre stage. The university’s vice-chancellor, Dr. Nani Gopal Mahanta, faced mounting criticism following the temporary removal of Dr. Kandarpa Sarma from his position.

In the wake of the unrest, the university administration has constituted an investigation committee to probe the matter. The committee will commence its inquiry on Monday, and until the report is submitted, the registrar will temporarily assume the responsibilities of the controller of examinations for a week. A permanent appointment will only be made after the investigation findings are thoroughly reviewed.

Addressing the turmoil, Vice-Chancellor Mahanta expressed regret over his conduct during the confrontation with protesting students. “I shouldn’t have been emotional yesterday, but I got a bit too emotional,” he admitted, while emphasizing that the decision was made after giving due consideration to the grievances raised by students. He also said that reforms are in progress across various sectors, particularly within the examination system.

While upholding the right to peaceful protest, Mahanta cautioned that disruptive demonstrations would not be tolerated. He reassured the university community that normalcy has been restored on campus and that stability has returned following the incident.
