IMPHAL: In a major success, the Manipur police has successfully seized brown sugar of Rs. 90 crore after a raid which was carried out in Imphal East on Wednesday.

During the raid which was one of the biggest drug haul in the state, the police arrested a constable of Manipur police for his purported involvement in the racket.

Based on a tip off, in the wee hours on Wednesday a team of the Narcotics Cell of Imphal East Police carried out a raid at a drug manufacturing unit at Yaripok Tulihal Awang Leikai in Imphal East.

During the raid the police seized 40 kg of brown sugar and around 430 kg of raw materials for manufacturing brown sugar. The seized contraband items are worth around Rs 90 crore in the international market.

The arrested head constable has been identified as Muzibur Rahman (42), another individual identified as Mohammad Firoj has also been arrested in connection with the case.

The Chief Minister of Manipur N. Biren Singh has announced Rs 10 lakh for the police team and wrote in his twitter, "Zero tolerance for anyone involved with illicit drugs. A team of Manipur Police, Dist. Administration & volunteers destroyed a Brown Sugar manufacturing unit at Yairipok. Recovered 3 bags of suspected Brown Sugar weighing 40kg. The team will be given a reward of Rs. 10 lakh"

Earlier, the Karbi Anglong police seized a huge quantity of heroin from a SUV vehicle along the Assam-Nagaland border in East Karbi Anglong on Wednesday. As per reports, the Karbi Anglong police, acting on specific information, intercepted a Bolero vehicle bearing registration number MN 01S 1680 in front of Lahorijan Patrol Post and recovered 50 soap cases containing 646 grams of fine quality heroin from the vehicle. The soap boxes were meticulously hidden inside the rear tail light of the vehicle.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the drugs were carried from Manipur and were supposed to be delivered in Guwahati. Two persons, namely Ngamsei Haokip (30) and Letkholal (47), have been arrested in connection. Both are residents of Manipur. The operation was carried under the leadership of IC Lahorijan PP SI (UB) Manujjal Gogoi and staff. The drugs were seized under the physical supervision of John Das APS, SDPO Bokajan and OC Dilai PS SI (UB) Bitupan Chutia.
