East Khasi Hills declares 'Dry Day' on Oct 2 to mark Gandhi's 151st birth anniversary

Shillong: Sale of alcohol and liquor shall be banned in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills district on Friday (October 2) on account of Mahatma Gandhi's 151st birth anniversary, officials said.

"The Deputy Commissioner (Excise), East Khasi Hills District has declared 2nd October, 2020 as 'Dry Day' throughout the entire district on account of Gandhi Jayanti," an official confirmed.

All the bonded warehouses, IMFL shops and outstill shops shall remain closed on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary.

Dry days are specific days when the sale of alcohol is not permitted. Most of the Indian states observe these days on major national festivals or occasions such as Republic Day (26 January), Independence Day (15 August), and Gandhi Jayanti (2 October).

Although it may not seem like a lot of fun, alcohol bans in the country usually coincide with some of the bigger festivals.
