Meghalaya: UGC gives nod to conduct final semester exams by October 16

Shillong: The University Grant Commission (UGC) has agreed to the proposed completion of the final semester examination in Meghalaya by October 16, 2020, state Education Minister, Lahkmen Rymbui informed via a tweet. The Meghalaya Government had earliest sought the UGC's permission to postpone the final semester exams in the state due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.

Rymbui further informed that the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) will conduct the examination as proposed on 7,9,12,14 and16 October, 2020. The results will be declared by the end of October 2020, he said, adding that the University will issue the routine accordingly.

"UGC has agreed to the proposed completion of Final Semester Exam in the State of Meghalaya by 16/10/2020. NEHU will conduct exam as proposed on 7,9,12,14 &16 October 2020. Results will be declared by the end of October 2020. University will issue routine accordingly," the Education Minister wrote in his tweet.

"Keeping in view the health and safety of the students and also in the larger interest of their academic progression, the UGC has decided to accede to your request. Accordingly, the final year/terminal semester examinations in colleges and universities in the state of Meghalaya to be completed by 16.10.2020", read the letter acquiescing to the Meghalaya Government's request that was undersigned by Professor Rajnish Jain, the Secretary of the Commission.

The Meghalaya Government had earlier urged the Union Grants Commission (UGC) to postpone upcoming examinations of the Post Graduate and Under Graduate final semester examinations to be conducted by the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) to October.

The request was made after the UGC said that the terminal semester(s), final year(s) examinations should be conducted by the universities or institutions by the end of September, 2020 in offline (pen and paper)/online/blended (online+offline) mode. As per the guidelines issued by the UGC, the terminal semesters or final year exams can be conducted by the universities or institutions in pen-paper based mode, online, or a blended mode as per the feasibility of the exam conducting body.
