Rat race among leaders

There seems to be a rat race among the leaders of some political parties and student organizations to act themselves as saviour of Assam.

Although, this act of State patriotism and assurance by them are good signs, yet it's very hard to digest. The common people of the State have been bored with these types of assurances given by many trustworthy leaders in the past before every election. Unfortunately, those patriotic leaders have been totally silent during the unprecedented situation arising out of COVID-19 pandemic and the recent devastating floods in the State. They are not seen among the public during these natural calamities. It is also heard that some editors of local dailies are reluctant to publish some letters related to constructive criticism of some party leaders for reasons best known to them. Moreover, some leaders of regional parties with the help of student organizations have been trying to form a new regional party due to their deteriorated reputation in public. We do not think simply forming a regional party by taking the advantage of people's sentiment will serve any purpose. We still hope to get a platform comprising many intellectuals of political and non political background, including student leaders to discuss various issues of the State and future course of action. Let us hope that a good atmosphere prevails in the State leading to a lasting solution.

SI recruitment examination

It is really a matter of surprise that the examination for the recruitment of Sub-Inspector of Police held on 20th September, 2020 had to be cancelled due to the leakage of question paper when the examination was going on. Be it HSLC, HSSLC or any examination conducted by any government department the question papers are generally kept in the custody of the local police near the examination centre. However, the leakage of the examination paper has tarnished the image of Police department as well as the government on the eye of the general public.

The Chief Minister who is now in Delhi has directed the DGP to inquire on the matter.

The Police department should be very serious on the matter and enquire the matter through a high-ranking police officer with integrity. Public will wait to see the action that will be taken against the culprit so that the lost faith is restored.

Freezing of DA of government employees

Sir, through your esteemed daily I want to express my view regarding the current freezing of Dearness Allowances and various arrear amounts of salaries of government employees in the name of mitigating the economic crisis arising out of COVID-19 pandemic. Government employees can be considered the running machine for the progress and development of a country. Barring a few, all government employees are providing their valuable services in various sectors like health, education, administration, etc. in various nook and corners and remote places of the country and contribute a lot in nation building with no or limited facilities. Even in the lockdown period, health workers, security personnel and persons involved in various emergency services are providing their valuable services in day and night and teachers are also carried out their online classes even from their home. Apart from their valuable services, they are also paying their income tax from their earned salaried amount and helping in nation building in an indirect way. Moreover, when any untoward situation arises, government employees always become the soft target from salary deduction to freezing of various allowances. But due to freezing of DA and various arrear amounts, salaried employees are facing a lot due to high prices of basic commodities and repaying of various EMIs. Employees can be considered as the backbone of the country. That's why to accelerate the economic growth in this critical period, government employees should be encouraged to work more. In this regard, they should be supported in every aspect to get more encouragement to get more dedication for their work. Hope, they should be provided with their basic needs by rethinking about the decision of freezing of DA and various arrear amounts of the government employees.

Beginning of a new era

The world men's tennis is dominated by Big 3 namely Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal for the last 15 years or so. Many new talents emerged in that time but all faded before these giants. But things are slightly changing as new generation players like Dominic Thiem, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev have emerged as a force to reckon with and stamp their authority in the coming years. This year US open men's singles final featured two new players from the usual trio who have made the habit of contesting finals as their right. Of course, this year's field was depleted with the withdrawal of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal but one must admit that the new generation players are exhibiting same mettle as their masters. Before concluding, it is every tennis lover's dream to see at least one Indian in the top 20 of ATP rankings.

Women's safety

Women's safety is a great concern in India. As evidenced by the increasing number of rapes being reported across the country, particularly in UP, a 70-year-old woman was allegedly raped and beaten up by a 25-year-old man last week. A few days back, an 86-year-old woman was allegedly brutally raped. It is very shameful for the whole of mankind that such heinous deeds are rapidly growing in the country. The government should focus on this matter and ensure that women have access to report sexual violence and receive protection against sexual harassment.

Proud moment for Assam

It is a matter of great proud for us that Bhaswati Choudhury, a talented young Assamese girl, who previously worked at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at University of Florida, has been appointed as the Chief Scientist in the COVID-19 research project in America. She had already completed her research in Plasma reactors and Microbiology. This former Cottonian had received Best Dissertation Award in the Mechanical and Aerospace Department at University of Florida in the month of May, 2020. Her sincere and dedicated hard works may surely help for fruitful success in the project which is related to Corona Pandemic.
