As per the curriculum for the academic year 2022-23 released on Thursday 21 April, verses by the Pakistani poet were excluded from the section 'Religion, Communalism and Politics' in the textbook named 'Democratic Politics II.'

These verses were part of the CBSE class 10 curriculum for more than 10 years in the NCERT political science subject.

As per the curriculum document, the section of 'Religion, Communalism and Politics' will be still part of the syllabus content but images on pages numbers 46, 48 and 48 has been excluded.

In the reprinted edition of the book these pages consisting of the verses and quotes by the Urdu poet have been removed.

The 2 excerpts that are excluded from NCERT class 10 social sciences are:

1. We remain strangers even after so many meetings, bloodstains remain after so many stains.

2. Not enough to shed tears, to suffer anguish, not enough to nurse love in secret.. Today, walk in the public square fettered in chains.

These lines are taken from the poem by Faiz that he composed when he was shifted from Lahore jail in chains to the office of a dentist.

A poster removed from the book consisted of another excerpt from Faiz's poem composed by him during his visit to Dhaka of Bangladesh in the year 1974. The poster was earlier issued by the Voluntary Health Association of India.

It may be mentioned that Faiz was the first Asian poet to be honoured with Lenin Peace Prize and was nominated for the Nobel Prize for literature in 1963.

Apart from Faiz's verses, the CBSC has also removed other chapters like 'Central Islamic Lands', Cold War Era and Non-aligned Movement and Popular struggle & movements.
