GUWAHATI: State PWD Minster Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that the Centre has already approved four flyovers on national highways in the State, including three in Guwahati Bypass.

Speaking on the sidelines of the laying of the foundation stone of the flyover near Supermarket here on Sunday, Sarma said, “The Centre has already approved a flyover each at Basistha, Boragaon and Lokhara on the national highway in Guwahati. Another flyover has also been approved on the National Highway at Baihata Chariali. This is not all. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already laid the foundation stone of Rs 2,600-crore bridge over the Brahmaputra, connecting the two banks of the river from Bharalumukh. The construction of this bridge is to start on an auspicious day in Magh in the Assamese calendar, and the construction will take three years. The construction of the bridge has already been awarded. The bridge will enable people reach Fancy Bazar in Guwahati from Rangiya in just 30 minutes. The New Development Bank is going to fund this project.”

Sarma further said that the State government is contemplating on constructing an elevated flyover on the riverside from Bharalumukh to near Raj Bhawan. “If everything goes as planned, the work of this flyover will be started by 2020,” he said.

The minister said that yet another over bridge from Maligaon to Bhootnath in the city is being studied. “The 4-km-long over bridge will also have a wing towards Pandu that will be connected to a route to the Kamakhya Temple from the Pandu side,” he said, and added: “Thirty per cent work of the RG Baruah Road wing of the existing flyover at Ganeshguri has been over. The Rs 54-crore work is going to be completed before the next Durga Puja.”
