GUWAHATI: Almost 30 percent posts in the Fire & Emergency Services, Assam are lying vacant. According to official data, till March, 2021, as against the sanctioned strength of 3,764, there are 1,147 posts lying vacant.
In the Class I category, against six sanctioned posts, 1 post is vacant. In Class II category, against 59 sanctioned posts, 24 are vacant; in the Class III category, as against 3,591 posts, 1,081 posts are vacant, in Class IV category, against 90 sanctioned posts, 39 posts are vacant, while in master roll category, against 18 sanctioned posts, 2 are vacant.
These are the figures till March, 2021. According to sources, during the past few months, 50 more posts across different categories have become vacant. There are 137 sanctioned Fire & Emergency Services Stations and five companies of SDRF Bn.
Besides, the department has opened seven ad-hoc Fire & Emergency Services Stations and nine fire camps utilizing the existing resources.
The mission of the department is to save life and property of the people of State timely in response to all kinds of disaster/ emergency situations by using the best technology and other resources including manpower available. The objective of the department include to respond to all types of disaster and emergency situation, both natural and man-made caused by fire, earthquakes, landslides, flood and erosions, chemical and biological mishaps, bomb explosions, major road accidents; to save life and properties of all citizen in case of fire hazards and in other natural calamities; and to generate public awareness by conducting seminars, public meeting, mock and evacuation drill with participation of the people at large. The department attended to 3,128 fire incidents in various parts of the State and saved property worth Rs. 568 crore out of property worth Rs. 684 crores (approximately) involved in fire incident, flood, landslides during the period 2020-21.
The department rescued 3,202 human lives and 212 animals, besides recovering 259 bodies from flood, landslides.
