GUWAHATI: Sleuths of the Crime Branch of the State Police Force recovered seven vehicles that had been taken by one Sanjib Medhi on a daily rental basis and sold some of them, while mortgaging the rest.

According to an FIR lodged by Abinash Kalita of Mathgharia, Guwahati, in 2020 Abinash and his friend Samarjyoti Kalita and others started self-drive agencies in various locations in Guwahati.

On November 11, 2020 Sanjib Medhi, c/o Sankar Medhi of 4 No. Bartala in Nalbari impersonated as a customer and took a vehicle (AS01 DL 5655 (i20 sports)) on rent per day basis. However, Sanjib Medhi had been untraceable since January 20, 2021 without paying rent. Later on the complainant came to know that the said fraudster Sanjib Medhi had taken as many six vehicles from various self-drive agencies and sold the vehicles to several people and had also mortgaged some of the vehicles against hefty amounts.

With the help of inbuilt GPS fitted in the vehicles it was learnt that the vehicles were under Mukulmua police stations. All the seven vehicles were recovered by a team of Crime Branch, Guwahati with the assistance of Mukulmua Police Station and seized them.

However, Sanjib Medhi has been absconding.

The registration numbers of the other six vehicles are – AS01ED1862, AS01EH7861, AS01DH8531, AS17K0366, AS01EA8942 and AS15P7998.
