GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) continued to stage protests across the State over the issue of General Science subject question paper leak and the subsequent postponement of the exam. The AASU said that playing with the future of lakhs of students was an unpardonable offense and those involved must be meted out strict punishment.

The Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA) postponed the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examination of the General Science subject, which was scheduled to be held on Monday, in view of reports of leakage of the question paper. The question paper of the General Science subject had gone viral on social media. On Sunday late night, SEBA issued a notification that the General Science exam scheduled to be held on Monday, had been cancelled. Later, SEBA announced a new examination date for the Science paper. The students will appear for the General Science examination on March 30.

AASU activists protested with effigies of State Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu, SEBA chairman and SEBA Controller of Examinations. The activists demanded that the Education Minister must resign and the SEBA Controller of Examinations should be arrested immediately as delay in his arrest would give him the chance to destroy or hide evidence. The AASU also demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the question paper leak incident.

AASU in-charge president Utpal Sarma and general secretary Sankorjyoti Baruah said, “Why is the Chief Minister, who is otherwise so vocal about scams, silent on the whole issue? The question paper leak is part of a conspiracy to erode people’s faith in SEBA. Measures must be taken by the government to protect the state board. The SEBA needs a complete overhaul.”

The AASU will organize a meeting on March 20 in Guwahati where suggestions will be sought from citizens and educationists on ways to save the state board.
