GUWAHATI: The Asom Sattra Mahasabha (ASM) moved Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma with the plea to renovate the Gobinda Bhawan Gita Satra located at Kurshopakori village in the Lakhipur area in the Goalpara district.

In his letter to the Chief Minister, ASM general secretary Kusum Kumar Mahanta said, "A herd of around 50 elephants damaged around 60 houses – 20 of bhakats and 40 of the tribal people there, besides killing the son of a bhakat – on May 13. The elephant herd also damaged the Gobinda Bhawan Gita Satra to a large extent. The elephant herd makes the people of the locality pass sleepless nights. We demand the government to renovate the xatra, besides giving the villagers relief from the herd. We also demand the government to pay compensation to the tribal villagers."
