Assam Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary refers matter to Privilege Committee

GUWAHATI: The Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, Biswajit Daimary, has referred for consideration of the Privilege Committee of the House the allegation levelled byAssam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) media department chairman, Manjit Mahanta, regarding the visit of five AIUDF MLAs to the Chief Minister's residence early on Friday morning.

AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam raised the matter in the House today and said that the allegation made by Mahanta has not only tarnished the image of the AIUDF legislators, but it has tarnished the image of the Chief Minister as well. He said that they had not gone to the Chief Minister's residence and the charge made by Mahanta is totally baseless.

He said that it is a clear case of breach of privilege and, therefore, it should be referred to the Privilege Committee of the House.

Reacting to the issue, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that firstly, no one goes to his residence so early in the morning. Secondly, prior permission has be obtained to visit the Chief Minister's residence. Thirdly, detailed records including CCTV footage, are kept of each visitor to the Chief Minister's residence. Inspection of these records will prove that the allegation is wrong, he said. He further clarified that the photograph being circulated by the Congress is an old one which was taken during the time of Garukhuti incident.

Sarma said that he is hurt by the baseless allegation, which is aimed at harming his image. An enquiry by the House committee is necessary, he added.
