GUWAHATI: With an aim to promote higher education in rural areas the Assam government has decided to set up 15 model colleges in the State.

Out of the total model colleges nine will be set up exclusively for women. The proposed model women colleges will come up at Sonai, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Chenga, Batadraba, Jaleshwar, Mangaldoi, Golakganj and Bilasipara. The colleges with all modern facilities will be set up within the next two year at the cost of Rs 30.43 crore.

On other hand six government model colleges will be set up at Borsola in Sonitpur district, Doomdoma in Tinsukia district, Chirang, Udalguri, Baksa and Majuli districts. Each model college will be set up at the cost of Rs 14.36 crore within the next two years.

In the past, the State had seen setting up of colleges mostly by the community or at societal level. Later the government used to provincialize these colleges. But the model colleges will be set up and run directly by the State government.

The model colleges will introduce modern and innovative courses to produce a pool of talented youths who could make themselves suitably employable after finishing their higher education.

The PWD has already floated tenders to award the contract of constructing the colleges to reputed firms and individuals.
