GUWAHATI: Along with the rest of the State, a pall of gloom descended over the city following the news that Lata Mangeshkar, the Nightingale of India, is no more.

From prominent personalities to the common man, many people became nostalgic as they recalled not only her immortal Hindi songs but also her Assamese classics such as 'Junakore raati, Oxomirey maati' (1957), and 'Godabori Noire Parorey Pora'. People also remembered her long and affectionate association with the Bard of the Brahmaputra, Dr Bhupen Hazarika.

Tributes poured in for the melody queen.

Assam Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi mourned the demise of the legendary singer, saying: "I condole the demise of the iconic Bharat Ratna Swar Kokila Lata ji. Her mellifluous voice endeared her across the globe. Although the void of her absence is not something replaceable, but the regal legacy she leaves behind will live on forever and continue to rule the heart of everybody. May her soul rest in eternal peace."

He further said, "With her death comes an end of an era. However, she will remain forever immortal and she will be remembered by generations to come."

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted: "Lataji was very close to our heart and she shared a very special bond with the people of Assam. She sang her first Assamese song 'Jonakore Raati' by closing her eyes after being described the natural beauty of Assam by Bhupen Da."

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal offered his condolences on the demise of the legendary singer.

"Lata Ji's demise is a great loss to the nation and marks the end of a golden era for Indian music. I join the nation in mourning for the departed soul and offer my deepest condolences to her family and millions of fans," the Union Minister stated.

Union Minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal also paid homage and offered floral tributes to Lata Mangeshkar at his residence in Guwahati on Sunday.

Asom Gana Parishad president and State Agriculture Minister Atul Bora and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) president and MP Badruddin Ajmal also expressed grief at Lata Mangeshkar's demise and extended their condolences.
