GUWAHATI: The Assam Mia Parishad is going to hold a seminar on ‘The Existence of Assamese Community’ on March 12.

Addressing a press conference at Dispur Press Club on Wednesday the Parishad said that the Mia people of Assam have been experiencing discrimination on many fronts. The Parishad claimed that even as the Mia people of Assam are rooted in the Kamrup-Kamtapuri tribe, they are often ignored, dishonored, discriminated upon and not recognized as indigenous Assamese. The Parishad questioned, “Is the Assamese identity secure if the Mia people are excluded from it?” Asomiya (Asom-Mia) Parishad president MG Hazarika said, “The current politics in Assam with the Mias has made us seek for an answer from groups concerned regarding our existence. We’ve witnessed that besides other groups, a section of intellectuals is trying to avoid us. A few recent statements made by leaders of the ruling party have also made us feel like being an outcast.”
