GUWAHATI: Assam State Power Workers' Union (ASPWU) and Assam State Outsource Power Workers' Union (ASOPWU) have announced their separate agitations against the non-fulfilment of their long-standing demands.

ASPWU is a conglomerate of the workers of APDCL (Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd), AEGCL (Assam Electricity Grid Corporation Ltd and APGCL (Assam Power Generation Corporation Ltd). ASOPWU is a united organization of all outsourced workers in the state power sector.

Demands of ASPWU are timely promotion for employees, stopping franchising of control rooms, ensuring the security of power workers, resolving the problems of temporary workers and pensioners, implementing the service rules of grade III and IV employees, making the state self-dependent on power through generation, transmission and distribution etc.

The union said that the Power department is neglecting all these long-standing demands. The union said that it would resort to agitation from December 14 in support of its demands.

ASOPWU will stage a two-hour sit-in strike in front of all Electrical Circle Offices in the state on December 19, 2022, in support of their demand for the regularization of all temporary workers in the department. It said that the department has decided to recruit employees without regularizing the jobs of temporary thousands of workers working in the APDCL, AEGCL and APGCL despite repeated requests from the ASOPWU.
