GUWAHATI: As a part of the Business Development Units (BDUs) initiatives by NFR (Northeast Frontier Railway), meetings with various stakeholders are being held regularly. During discussion, they are informed that they can easily transport their commodities from their nearest convenient railway station at a much cheaper rate in comparison to the Road sector.

These discussions by the BDUs within their respective areas are also helping to find new segment of traffic for movement by train. In a recent such initiative, the BDUs of divisions under Northeast Frontier Railway organised various meeting with different traders and merchants during the period from September 4 to 8, 2021.

During such meetings organized under the BDU initiative of Katihar division at New Jalpaiguri on September 4, 2021 different traders were informed about transportation of fertilizer, tea, jute, fruits and vegetables through train with lesser cost. The BDU of Katihar division also organized a meeting with several merchants on September 8 regarding loading of parcel traffic. The BDU of Alipurduar division on 6 th September held discussion with traders for loading of piecemeal edible oil from different stations of Alipurduar division.

The Business Development Units (BDUs) of Lumding division organised meeting with exporters to Bangladesh on September 4 and explored the ways to improve logistics at the Jirania station. The BDU of Lumding division also discussed with traders on September 7 regarding coal loading from Digaru and Kamalajari stations, subject to opening of the siding for coal loading. A fruitful discussion was also held with traders at Rangapahar for loading of stone.

In the Tinsukia division, such discussions were held on September 5 with merchants regarding transportation of edible oil through train at cost effective way. The Divisional Railway Manager of Tinsukia division on September 7 held a meeting with merchants of New Tinsukia and discussed how to improve unloading operations at New Tinsukia yard and to encourage business development.

It may be noted that N.F. Railway has set up Business Development Units (BDUs) at all the Divisions i.e. Katihar, Alipurduar, Rangiya, Lumding and Tinsukia and also at Zonal Head Quarters level to increase the freight transportation volume. The initiatives by the BDUs of various divisions have been successful in bringing in new mode of traffic to railways from road sector.
