Breaking: Subham Elite Apartment in Guwahati's Gandhi Basti declared as Containment Zone

Guwahati: Amid the rapidly rising number of Covid-19 cases in Guwahati city, one more location -- the Subham Elite Apartment in Gandhi Basti locality -- has been declared as a Containment Zone. Biswajit Pegu, the Deputy Commissioner of the district -- has directed the circle officer to seal the area with immediate effect until further orders.

The order was given after a male resident of the building tested Covid-19 positive. 250 families who reside in the apartment building have been asked to observe home quarantine.

At the same time, health officials have already collected the swab samples of several of the Covid-19 patient's contacts, including his wife's. The samples have been sent for processing, and the test results are awaited.

The situation in Guwahati has grown rather alarming in the recent past, with hundreds of cases detected in the city in the recent past. After the Government kickstarted a targetted surveillance initiative, 144 random samples tested positive within a span of 48 hours. Taking cognizance of the severity of the situation, the district administration has been prompt in enforcing yet another lockdown in the city. However, this time around, the lockdown will be observed in the worst-affected areas falling under 11 wards across the city.

Meanwhile, 6,056 Covid-19 cases have been detected in Assam so far. While 3,762 people have been discharged, 2,282 people are 'active' and under observation. 9 people have died so far due to complications from the illness.
