Guwahati: A man died in a commercial building at Guwahati six mile, suspected to be a suicide. The incident took place in the afternoon and the body of the deceased could be seen from the road, according to eyewitnesses.

Police reached the scene and started the investigation. According to the police the incident took place at around 9:30 AM- 10:00 AM in the morning, however, the reason of the death is yet to be ascertained. The deceased was found hanging inside a shop located at the 2nd floor of the commercial establishment.

The body was later taken to the hospital for post-mortem.

According to police reports, last year around 373 cases of suicide have been filled alone in Guwahati.

Assam in 2020 had 3,243 suicides, an average of 8.88 per day, a 36.8% increase over the previous year. According to the most recent data from the Centre for Suicide Prevention, more than half of those who committed suicide were unemployed or working on a daily pay.

According to the research, 974 unemployed people and 789 daily wage workers committed suicide during the pandemic-hit lockdown period, accounting for more than 54% of all suicide victims in the state in 2020. There were 2,337 male suicides and 906 female suicides among the 3,243 suicides, according to the report.

Family conflicts accounted for 42.7 percent of suicides in 2020, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), while love affairs claimed 13.38 percent of lives. Assam also experienced ten occurrences of mass or family suicides, in which ten individuals died.

According to the NCRB, which is part of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the suicide rate (per lakh population) climbed from 6.9 in 2019 to 9.3 in 2021. The national average is 11.3 percent.
