GUWAHATI: Despite 24x7 CCTV surveillance and tight security, a car was stolen from the parking inside the Assam Secretariat on July 15. The car (AS01DZ 9448) was a part of the convoy of none other than Bongaigaon MLA Phani Bhusan Choudhury. The owner of the vehicle is Pradeep Sarma, who had given the car on rent to the Assam Police.

Shockingly, no one was aware that the car was stolen until the vehicle met with an accident at Numaligarh, Golaghat on Friday. In this regard, the Dispur Police has arrested two persons, who have been identified as Ariful Ali (23) and Safiqul Ali (23).

According to a police source, Ariful is a former driver of the vehicle and Safiqul was the former driver of Congress leader Rakibul Hussain.

The police said that Ariful stays in a rent room with Habijul Ali, who is the current driver of the stolen vehicle. By seizing an opportunity, Ariful stole the vehicle's key from Habijul and gave it to one Ajibor Ali. Later, Ajibor along with Safiqul and Nawab Ali stole the vehicle from the premises of the Secretariat.

After meeting with the accident, the accused abandoned the car which was later recovered by the police.
