Guwahati: Today is the 87th birthday of Dhirendra Nath Bezbaruah, one of Assam's leading journalists, a father-figure of English journalism in Assam, Dhirendra Nath Bezbaruah.

He was the Founder Editor of one of Northeast's leading English newspapers, The Sentinel. Bezbaruah is also the founder President of Northeast Writers ' Forum.

On his birthday, eminent writers Mitra Phukan, Dhruba Hazarika and Srutimala Duara visited the senior journalist at his residence to celebrate the day and convey their regards.

Born in the year 1933, Bezbaruah grew up in the Jorhat district of Assam. He completed his post-graduate studies at Reading University, UK.

For Bezbaruah's contribution to the field of journalism, he was awarded the B.D. Goenka Award for Journalism in 1997. He is also a recipient of Nachiketa Samman by Panchajanya weekly.

Bezbaruah has published several books from Assamese into English, one of which is The Cavern and Other Stories, originally written by Bhabendra Nath Saikia. He has been awarded the Katha Award for translation. The Government of India has awarded Bezbaruah with the highest civilian award of the country, Padma Shri in the year 2016, for his contribution in the field of literature.
