
GUWAHATI: In a bid to ensure enhanced healthcare to the people of the state, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday inaugurated the Dhirenpara First Referral Unit (FRU) as an Annexe to the Gauhati Medical College & Hospital, stated a press release.
In view of the fact that services of Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH) under GMCH will remain closed from Saturday as a new 800-bedded multi-speciality hospital will be constructed in place of the MMCH, which will be Guwahati's second medical college, the Dhirenpara FRU and Pandu FRU will now be operational for the patients who were undergoing treatment at MMCH. Medical services such as OT facility, medicine specialist, surgery, obstetrics & gynaecology, ENT, free X-Ray, ultrasound, laboratory services etc. will be available at the FRUs, the press release added.
The Health & Family Welfare Minister Keshav Mahanta, West Guwahati MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita and MLA and Political Secretary to the Chief Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah were present during the inauguration of the FRU.
CM visits ashrams: Chief Minister Sarma also visited Kasturba Gandhi Ashram at the Sarania Hills in the city and spent some time at the cottage where Mahatma Gandhi stayed for three nights during his visit to Assam in 1946. Sarma also took the blessings of 102-year-old Gandhian Sakuntala Choudhury, the press release said.
The Chief Minister also interacted with the sevikas and took stock of activities at the Ashram and enquired about the challenges faced by the institution. He assured that the State government would take all possible steps to address the issues. Sarma also informed that the Government of Assam would take up a developmental project at the Ashram for preserving its rich heritage.
Later, the Chief Minister also visited Shanti Sadhana Ashram at Basistha in Guwahati and took the blessings of noted Gandhian and founder of the Ashram Hem Bhai. During the visit, the Chief Minister also discussed various activities of the Ashram and its future plans and programmes. MLA Jayanta Malla Baruah accompanied the Chief Minister during the visits.
Earlier in the morning, the Chief Minister inaugurated a library at the Chief Minister's Block at Janata Bhawan as his first engagement of the New Year. The library consists of several highly recognized book titles.
