GUWAHATI: The CPI (Communist Party of India) has stated that the Congress-led Mahajoot's failure in the Assembly polls is due to its own mistakes. In a statement, CPI Assam State Council secretary Munin Mahanta said, "In the elections, despite having a good opportunity to root out the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) from power, the Mahajoot lost due to their own mistakes. Another reason for their defeat is vote splitting by the newly floated parties – Assam Jatiya Parishad and Raijor Dal."

Mahanta asserted that the Mahajoot was formed too late and it was not based on the Common Minimum Programmes.

"The entire campaign of the BJP was communal, full of hatred towards other parties, and beneficiary oriented. On the other hand, the Five Guarantee Campaign of the Congress was also beneficiary oriented. Thus the people voted for the BJP as their beneficiary schemes seemed more appealing," Mahanta stressed.

Further, he underlined that the election process needs some reforms. He said that unconstitutional and undemocratic methods, money, power and force are used in the elections. He pointed out that, in the recent polls, while the Mahajoot received 43 per cent votes; the Mitrajoot received 41 per cent. However, the Mitrajoot secured more seats. On the other hand, the All India United Democratic Front received fewer votes but secured more seats.

"It is evident from the results that reforms are needed to represent peoples' mandate in the polls," Mahanta added.
