GUWAHATI: A electronic crematorium built at a cost of Rs 509.41 lakh has been inaugurated at Ulubari in Guwahati by GDD Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya on Monday. The crematorium has been constructed by the GMDA.

Inaugurating the crematorium Minister Bhattacharya said that the crematorium is first of its kinds in the Northeast. He said that the responsibility for management of the Crematorium lies with the GMC (Guwahati Municipal Corporation) which will form a committee to manage it until it becomes self-sufficient.

Bhattacharya said, "The problem being faced by the State Health department in disposing bodies of people dying of COVID-19 will now be over. This crematorium will be very much helpful. A few works, including land filling and car parking area are yet to be completed. However, overall the crematorium is ready for being operational."

"The entire process of cremation will be pollution free. We've followed the norms set by the Pollution Control Board, Assam (PCBA). It'll consume less time. Usually cremation of a body takes around 3 hours, but it'll hardly take an hour. We hope to proceed with the traditional methods simultaneously with electric cremation," he added.
