GUWAHATI: Life was slowly limping back to normal after two years of the COVID-19 pandemic. But there has again been a spurt in the number of fresh COVID cases reported from across the State in the past few days. It is now time to mask up again and follow COVID appropriate behaviour.

Superintendent of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Dr Abhijit Sarma said that Assam reported as many as 161 new COVID cases on Monday. Out of the total 61 cases, as many as 90 cases were reported from the Kamrup (metro) district.

Dr Sarma, while talking to media persons, said, "I urge the people to follow all COVID protocols and maintain COVID appropriate behaviour. Masks should be worn not only in public spaces but at all times if possible."

He also urged people to take the precaution dose or the booster dose of the vaccine as soon as possible. "Many people have not taken the precaution dose of the COVID vaccine. I urge people to take the precaution dose as soon as possible," he said. Dr Sarma said that most of the patients who tested positive for the virus had symptoms like flu fever.

He also informed about GMCH's preparedness to deal with another wave of COVID-19. "A total of 589 beds are ready and available at GMCH. Total 38 ICU beds are available at the Kalapahar hospital, 100 in the GMCH parking and 300 at Sarusajai. At present there are five patients recovering from the virus here at GMCH."
