Dispur Police Official Arrested for Demanding Bribe

GUWAHATI: For the third time this year, a police officer has been caught in the web red-handed for demanding a bribe. Dispur SI Rohin Pegu had allegedly demanded Rs 50,000 from an SBI branch manager after seizing his motor license. Dispur police and Anti-Corruption Vigilance joined hands and caught Pegu red-handed accepting the bribe on Thursday evening. Pegu was immediately arrested under extortion charges and a case (2941/19) has been registered against him. Commissioner of Police Deepak Kumar said, “It is a matter of great shame for our department that the authorities that are supposed to provide protection themselves indulge in illegal activities. If the same situation is faced by anyone, they should without a second thought, approach us. Legal action will be taken against such bureaucrats who take undue advantage of their positions.”
