GUWAHATI: An important meeting of the District Road Safety Committee of the Kamrup Metropolitan District was organised on Thursday. The Additional Commissioner of the Transport Department, Dr. Dhrubajyoti Hazarika, chaired this meeting. Pointing out various avenues, the Additional Commissioner iterated the chief minister’s order to do a detailed scientific study regarding the accident to be carried out by concerned officials.
He also said that the city's accident-prone areas will be identified, speed control signs will be placed in clear letters, more lighting will be provided, and the illegal liquor trade will be stopped in the dhabas near Pamohi, Gorhchuk, and Boragaon areas. The Additional Commissioner urged other departments, including transport, police, and public works, to take the necessary measures. He also said that if someone is found driving under the influence, apart from paying the requisite fine, the driver and the passengers will be spending time in police custody, and he appealed to the officials of the transport department to hand them over to the concerned police station.
Assistant Transport Commissioner Gautam Das appealed to all the departments concerned to identify the ‘black spots’ in the city and take necessary action to prevent any incidents in these locations, and asked for the active participation of everyone.
The recent accident that claimed the lives of seven students was discussed, and the officials expressed sympathy towards their family members. In order to prevent any such incident in the future, the officials agreed to strengthen the road safety initiatives. Problems including bike stunts, red light violations, drunk driving, open-top vehicles, uncontrolled speeding, abnormal and loud noises from various vehicles, the use of black glass in vehicles, the identification of accident-prone areas in the city, and other important issues were discussed in the meeting.
DCP Traffic Hiranya Kumar Barman, District Road Safety Committee Member-Secretary Hemanta Deuri Bharali, GMC Joint Commissioner Pranab Dutta Goswami, Public Works Department Officers Kalyan Kumar Das, Shikha Devi Sharma, Nav Kumar Sharma, Ayush Rana from NHAI, and Transport Officer Himanshu Kumar Das were present at the meeting, which was also attended by Regional Transport Authority Rafiqul Islam, Traffic Inspector Joysing Rangfar, Nitu Chetia, and senior officials of various departments involved in the District Road Safety Committee.
