Documentary on Baghjan Gas Blowout to be premiered on Discovery Channel

GUWAHATI: An investigative documentary on last year's Baghjan gas blowout in Upper Assam will be premiered on Discovery Channel at 7.30 pm on Sunday.

An official of the Oil India Ltd (OIL) said the documentary would narrate the story of the unprecedented catastrophe in Baghjan amidst the pandemic in 2020. He said the prime objective of the documentary is to shape and influence course correction to prevent a repeat of the catastrophe like Baghjan in future. The documentary to be premiered on Discovery Channel and the Discovery+ streaming platform at 7.30 pm on Sunday, has already generated a great deal of interest and curiosity in the energy sector globally. The two-part documentary—Inside the Burning—has been made on a gas well blowout with live footage. The gas well blowout took place on May 27, 2020 and the subsequent well head fire on June 9 had devastating impacts on around 8,000 residents living around the well and the local ecology. The gas well was finally killed through snubbing on November 15 and abandoned on December 3, 2020.
