Dumper hits newly-installed traffic signal; driver arrested in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: Within a week of the inauguration of the Integrated Traffic Management System in Guwahati, a traffic signal pole got dislodged after a dumper rammed into it. The incident took place at Sixmile in the city on Monday night.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Hiranya Kumar Barman told media persons on Tuesday, "Video footage shows that the dumper was coming from the Panjabari side but it was on the wrong track. While reversing the dumper, the driver hit the traffic signal pole. As the dumper was on the wrong track, the Automatic Number-plate Recognition (ANPR) meter could not identify the registration number but investigation is on."

Soon after this, Guwahati City Police arrested Md Ramjul Ali of Mukalmua, the driver of the dumper. The dumper has also been seized. The owner of the dumper, Md Sultan Ali of Aziz Nagar, has also been asked to join the probe.

The phase-I of the Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) under the City Police Commissionerate for traffic management and control from ITMS Control Room, Ulubari was inaugurated in the city last week. The primary goal of ITMS is to utilize information technology to modernize key functions of traffic management, traffic control, traffic law enforcement and traffic information dissemination to build a safer city with smooth traffic flow and by improving the efficiency and effectiveness of road traffic infrastructure.
