GUWAHATI: Construction work of eight medical colleges in the State is going on and by next year, students will be able to take admission in the MBBS course in Dhubri Medical College, said State Health Minister Keshab Mahanta.

Addressing a press meet in the city on Friday, Mahanta said, "By Bohag Bihu in 2022 (April), the Assam Government plans to start eight cancer hospitals in the State." The minister also announced that another medical college will be set up in Guwahati. The services of the new hospital will be inaugurated on January 1, 2022 by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Meanwhile, services at Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH) will be shut from January 1, 2022. Pandu FRU and Dhirenpara hospital will be run by Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for the patients undergoing treatment at MMCH.

The Health Minister said that in 2021, the State Government had provided Rs 2 lakh each to 65,900 people under the Atal Amrit Abhiyan. Also, Rs 5 lakh had been provided to 6,500 beneficiaries under Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM JAY). "This year, total 3,361 people were appointed to various posts in the Health Department," he said and added that total 19,803 children having cleft lip or palate have been operated under Operation Smile.

In view of rising cases of the Omicron variant, the Health Minister said that international travellers will have to undergo mandatory seven days quarantine in the country, even if they test COVID negative.

"The vaccination drive for the age group of 15-18 years will start from January 3 and we have targeted to vaccinate 10 lakh students of this age group with Covaxin," he said.

Genome sequencing facilities are now available at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research–North East Institute of Science And Technology (CSIR–NEIST) in Jorhat, said the Health Minister.
