GUWAHATI: There has been an increase in the number of fake transgenders in the city, which is causing a major problem among the citizens. These fake individuals who are seen as transgender are often found begging in the streets or harassing people. This not only causes problems for the transgender community but also poses a threat to them.

There is a huge community of transgender people on the back side of Kamakhya Railway Station. One of the transgender people from there said, "In Guwahati, there has been an increase in the number of transgenders, and this has caused a lot of problems. If I cross-check, there are about 300 transgender people as a whole, while the rest seem to be fakes. For these fake transgenders, our image has been ruined. And these fake transgenders are mostly involved in chain snatching, harassing people for money, or other criminal acts."

The transgender person further said, "We are fighting for our rights every day, and these fake identities are ruining us all. As a whole, we do not have any status in society, and for them, we are facing major issues. We, the real transgenders, never force people to give us money or harass them. We work hard and earn our wage as best we can."

"The problem of fake transgender is not only limited to the city but an overall problem, and the government should look into this matter."

Another one said, "Usually we are thrown out of our house if we identify ourselves to be transgender, but these fake transgenders have families; they dress up in a stereotypical way and earn money. We have held numerous protests against these fake identities. There are also cases where these fake transgender people are arrested. There is a pre-conceived notion that transgender people are sex workers, but it is not true all the time; some work really hard to just have a one-day meal or serve their community. These fake transgenders are not a new issue, but they have become a major problem."
