Film to be made on Lachit Borphukan: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

GUWAHATI: Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Monday that a film will be made shortly on Bir Lachit Borphukan.

The Chief Minister made the announcement while inaugurating an Audio-Visual Hub at the Jyoti Chitraban film studio here, which has been constructed at a cost of Rs 10 crore.

Speaking on the occasion, Sarma said that he was delighted to inaugurate the Audio Visual Hub as it will enable producers across the State other Northeastern States to do all post-production activities of their films without going to either Chennai or Mumbai for the post-production activities of their films. He said that the subsidized rates at which the facilities at the audio-visual hub will be given on hire to the film producers will help them to do their post production works like picture editing, sound editing, sound mixing, visual effects, color correction, graphic designing etc., in the State.

The Chief Minister said that though the Covid-19 pandemic has had its impact on Assamese film industry, the State Government is taking several innovative steps to revitalize the industry. Hailing Jyoti Chitraban Film Studio for its role in promoting the art of film making in Assam, the Chief Minister said that the institution has been changing itself with the changing times. He said that the institution, which was set up in the year 1961, was a manifestation of the dream of cultural doyen Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agrawala, who made the first Assamese film 'Joymati'. Stating the journey of Assamese films which made its first appearance in the year 1935, Sarma said that over the years the films have been a medium which reflects aspirations of the people.

He said that considering the fact that films are the means by which tributes can be paid to the persons who promoted the historical and cultural heritage of the State, the State Government is preparing a feature film on Bir Lachit Borphukan.

Sarma said that due to the emergence of Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms, the trouble of deciding where to release movies has almost disappeared. He appealed to the Assamese filmmakers to make multilingual films.

The Chief Minister further announced that a new theatre will be set up at Jyoti Chitraban with a capacity of seating 1,500 people. Along with this, several cinema halls will be set up across the city, including Khanapara, with a capacity of seating 5,000 people. He also announced that ITA, Machkhowa will be renovated.

Cultural Affairs Minister Bimal Bora, who was also present on the occasion, spoke on the State Government's role in making Jyoti Chitraban a potential hub of film making.

Rajya MP and political secretary of the Chief Minister, Pabitra Margherita, and chairman of Jyoti Chitraban Film Studio Society, Bidyasagar Bora also spoke on the occasion.
