Following Protests & Appeals, NGT Ensures Closure of Boragaon Dumping Site in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: It took an astounding seven years of protests and petitions in order to close down Guwahati's biggest dumping yard which has been operational for a decade. The Boragaon dumping site which is in close proximity with Deepor Beel has been finally closed down today and the decision was taken keeping the ecological balance of Deepor Beel in mind.

It is to be noted that, the Boragaon dumping site used to receive 95% of the city's daily garbage was being since more than 10 years of its operation and its adverse effects were clearly seen on the Deepor Beel site.

Being one of the most disputed dumpings, it started functioning in 2008 and has been the center of controversy and protests for affecting the environment and wildlife right from its beginning.

It may be mentioned that, 27 compact vehicles filled with garbage on a daily basis would dump 522 metric tonnes of garbage, now that's a whooping amount.

The dumping site has seen numerous protests from the environment activists and even the locals residing there, who have been strongly protesting against the dumping ground. According to the locals, the dumping ground being so near the Deepor Beel, it has harmed the balance of ecology and affected the wildlife in it.

Sources said that the decision was taken based on numerous complaints and petitions that were filed to date along with hearings on this matter, the National Green Tribunal in April 2019 directed Gauhati Municipal Corporation to shift the Boragaon dumping site. The dumping site has been finally been closed today.

It may be mentioned that Deepor Beel which was once a sprawling wetland comprising of around 4,000 hectares now remains just about 500 hectares and is constantly facing various natural and anthropogenic threats.
