GUWAHATI: Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has welcomed the move taken by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal by calling an all-party meeting in the wake of COVID-19.

In a statement issued to the press on Saturday, Gogoi said, “I welcome the move. I’ll attend the meeting and extend my opinions. I hope the State government will give succour for doctors, economists, industrialists, businessmen, working class, farmers, unemployed and others. I’ll request the Chief Minister to take measures to get rid of COVID-19 and economic crisis in the State.”

Tarun Gogoi further said, “We need to follow the Kerala government that has taken pragmatic steps for preventing corona outbreak and healing the economic crisis. Kerala has many things similar to Assam. The Kerala government has made arrangements for rapid tests and taken all public health facilities to the people. It has also allowed agricultural activities without violating social distancing and permitted tea estates to resume work. We can also take such steps for the benefit of farmers and others.”

Gogoi said, “The State government should take a few state-specific schemes since some of our problems like floods don’t match with those of other states. If the breached embankments are not repaired immediately in the State, the situation will be disastrous. I hope the State government will strike the right balance between public health and economy.”
