GUWAHATI: The Post-Graduate Students' Union (PGSU) of the Gauhati University (GU) has condemned alleged police brutality on the students of the university during a protest programme on Tuesday and accused Assistant Commissioner of Police Bhargav Goswami of perpetrating atrocities on the students.

Students of the 6th semester of the Gauhati University from different colleges under the university came together and staged a protest yesterday against alleged anomalies in results of the 5th semester examination, which were declared by the university on July 29.

The police intervened during the protest and carried out a lathi-charge on the protesting students. Some protesting students, including PGSU president Hemen Kalita, were detained by the police. A girl student was also shifted to the hospital for treatment due to injuries.

The PGSU members have claimed that they were trying to find a solution to the issue, but the protest turned violent when the police intervened and tried to stop the protesters by forcefully pushing them into a bus and taking them to the police station.

The students' union blamed GU authorities, police and the Government for the entire situation.

The PGSU members demanded that the police should be made answerable for yesterday's atrocities, failing which they will stage another massive protest in the GU campus.

They said irregularities on the part of Integrated University Management System (IUMS) led to the anomalies of the 5th semester results. They further alleged that the incident happened as blacklisted IT companies of Delhi were given online access for declaring the results. They demanded the online access given to these companies should be withdrawn within two-three days.

The general secretary of the GU, Biki Sarma said, "The Jalukbari police and the authorities of the university tried to break down a peaceful protest that was organized by over 500 students against the alleged anomalies of the 5th semester results. We condemn the grievous action by the police on the students. We want justice and we will protest until our demands are heard."
