GUWAHATI: NRL EXOCON, a society comprising past officers of Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) as well as ex-officers of NRL presently working in other public sector hydrocarbon industry, successfully conducted its signature programme 'Greening Assam' recently at the PWD Convention & Training Centre at Dispur.

According to a press release, this is one of the society's many endeavors aimed at creating awareness of the need to conserve the natural environment of the State and regenerate its degraded forests.

The well-attended programme was addressed by the chief guest Manick Chandra Bora, a veteran of the hydrocarbon sector and who, as representative of the Government of Assam, successfully pursued the cause of establishing an independent corporate structure for NRL. Bora shared his thoughts on nurturing different species of plants and foliage with emphasis on bamboo, available in abundance in Assam, and variously described as 'Green Gold' or 'Green Gasoline' due to its multiple uses and versatile qualities. The chief guest formally released a souvenir published specially for the occasion.

The guest of honour Dr Arup Kumar Misra, a distinguished educationist and currently Chairman, Pollution Control Board of Assam, in his presentation highlighted diverse aspects of environmental vulnerability and concepts of sustainable development to meet the needs of the present without damaging the ecology and environment.

The presentation was followed by a brief cultural programme in which well-known artiste and Sangeet Natak Academy Award winner Moinul Haque presented an engrossing mime performance. After the mime, there was a musical enactment based on the theme 'Greening Assam', performed by an artiste's group called 'Rihon'. At the conclusion of the programme, the organizers took care to distribute saplings of a wide variety of trees amongst the audience present.
