Guwahati: Amid Flash Floods, Contaminated Tap Water Adds to Misery Among City Dwellers

GUWAHATI: Floods or potable water crisis, water remains the biggest problem in our lives year-round, especially among the residents of Guwahati.

While the city is already deprived of basic facilities, the copious rains only come to aggravate the problem being faced by the people.

Meanwhile, people have started complaining of contaminated water in the past few weeks from several parts of the city.

Notably, residents of the Chandmari area have been forced to collect, rather than drink- muddy, murky, yellowish water while residents of the Kharghuli area said that there was no water at all during the days of artificial flooding in Guwahati.

However, for the last 5-6 days they have been getting very poor quality dirty water.

Even as the city is facing an acute drinking water shortage, it is said that officials of the Water Supply & Sewerage Board are not responding to complaints of a short supply of drinking water and supply of contaminated water from all corners of the city.

One of the most common issues in the city is yellowish water. Residents of Happy Villa, Uzan Bazar, Guwahati alleged that due to the poor drinking water soon people will be affected by the waterborne disease if this continues.

Residents are now urging the City mayor Mrigen Sarania to provide not only drinking water but should be equally consumable.

Speaking to the media Assam State GDD minister Ashok Singhal said, "Due to few problems the process of giving tap water has been running slow, however partial commissioning of clean drinking water by July end."
