Guwahati City ATMs under Surveillance

GUWAHATI: The Guwahati city residents can no longer breathe easy after a slew of theft cases have suddenly erupted in the city. Several bank customers have lost huge sums of money as a probable team of hackers have skillfully managed to steal from several people, their money in both ATM and Paytm accounts.

Recently, a high-tech device used by ATM hackers, a first of its kind in the Northeast, was detected at an SBI ATM at Dispur Last Gate. The device – comprising a spy camera, a memory card and a small data device – can record ATM details of bank customers. The small device called as ATM hacker was kept fitted at the passage of the ATM through which cards are swiped.

There are 16 ATMs in Bhangagarh, 30 in Chandmari, 18 in Fatasil Ambari, 21 in Geetanagar, 17 in Gorchuck, 13 in Latasil, and various others scattered around the city, with Dispur housing the largest number of ATMs of 65 to 70. Now, city police has formed a special team in each police station here in the city, who will patrol and visit the various ATMs as well as banks from morning till midnight to check for anything suspicious. The team will regularly update and report about events to the commissioner.
