GUWAHATI: Days after the inauguration of the newly Integrated Traffic Management System (digital traffic signals), a traffic signal pole got toppled after a dumper rammed into it.

The incident occurred at the Sixmile area in Guwahati in the wee hours of August 29.

Notably, the ITMS was inaugurated by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on August 23 to ensure smooth traffic movement across the city which has been adding at least 2000 vehicles every day.

Earlier, Giving enough time to citizens to adjust themselves to the new traffic management systems, Guwahati Police Commissioner Harmeet Singh said that they won't be charged with e-challan for five to six days initially.

Singh said that since violators won't be charged with challans that don't mean that one should knowingly violate the rules. Instead one should try to adapt to the new traffic rules.

''As you are all aware of the fact that in Guwahati Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) has been implemented. Until and unless citizens are not completely adjusted themselves to the new traffic systems, we will not charge them with challan for five to six days,'' he during a press conference.

He also pleaded with municipal residents to assist with traffic control and asked the people to stick to their lanes while driving.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday dedicated to the people of Guwahati the phase-I of the Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) under the City Police Commissionerate for traffic management and control from ITMS Control Room, Ulubari in the city.

In the first phase, ITMS will cover 20 junctions from Nepali Mandir to Khanapara. In the final phase, a total of 94 junctions will come under the ambit of ITMS.

The smart signal system has been installed at 20 locations – Paltan Bazar, Nepali Temple, Ulubari, Bhangaghar, ABC Point, Srinagar Point, Ganeshguri, Super Market, Six Mile, VIP Road, Khanapara Flyover, Last Gate, Jayanagar Point, Ganesh Mandir and Rajdhani Mosque.

The ITMS is a state-of-the-art citizen-friendly, integrated and responsive traffic surveillance and control mechanism, equipped with cameras at major junctions of the city. It will help in checking traffic violations and will lead to seamless traffic movement in the city.
