GUWAHATI: The Guwahati police has released a photograph of the woman who kidnapped an infant named Priyam Kalita from the paediatric ward of the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) recently.

The ADCP (Crime) of Guwahati Police informed the media that they have gained some new information regarding the kidnapping, which they will not disclose at present.

The kidnapper is suspected to be a resident of a neighbouring district such as Kamrup, Nalbari or Barpeta, and it is believed that the infant may have been taken one of these districts. Search operations are being carried out in these districts, he said.

The motive behind the crime will be ascertained after the kidnapper is apprehended, the ADCP said.

Footage of the woman who kidnapped the infant was captured on 12 CCTV cameras at the GMCH premises, but the fact that she was wearing a mask delayed her identification.

It may be recalled that Priyam Kalita had been admitted to the GMCH on March 24 with fever and anemia. In the wee hours of April 13, Priyam's father gave the child to an unknown lady for consoling the crying child. Both the parents fell asleep between 4:30 am and 5:30 am. Later, when they woke up they found that the child was missing along with the lady.

Following the incident, two missing reports were filed separately by the child's father and the hospital authority at the Bhangagarh Police Station.
