GUWAHATI: Parts of Guwahati have been suffering from a water shortage in the last few days, with some people having to wait up to three days to get water at their homes. Without a proper water supply, citizens are suffering heavily from this heat wave and the lack of water.

With the groundwater levels depleting fast in this severe dry spell, residents of many parts of the city are now relying on water supplied to them by small vehicles, which has been going on for several years now. But in the last few days, the authorities have imposed heavy fines on these vehicles for various reasons. They have also increased the prices for supplying water in different parts of the city.

One such water supplier informed us that the police and the transport department had imposed heavy fines on them in the last few days. Some of them include the use of plastic tanks in place of metal ones, the capacity of the tanks, etc. If we continue supplying at the same price as well as pay the fines, we have to pay from our pockets.

One person from the Six Mile area of the city mentioned, “Why do the authorities issue permits if these businesses are not legal? Also, why do they have to take these steps when people are already suffering from the scorching heat? What were they doing earlier?”
