GUWAHATI: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), former president and MP Ripun Bora alleged that under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led government in the country, more people have become poor while businessmen have gained more.

Addressing a press conference at Rajib Bhawan here Bora highlighted the economy under BJP's rule in which the income of 84% people have drastically come down.

Further Bora said that under the UPA government when Manmohan Singh was the prime minister, 27 crore people were able to come over the Below Poverty Line (BPL) category. According to the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDG) programme, in India poor people consisted of 8 crore, i.e. 6.7 per cent of the population. But in the last 7 years under the BJP led government additional 12.6 crore people more have fallen in to the BPL category.

Bora said that during 2020-21 the income of 84% people have drastically come down as per report of OXFAM India while in case of billionaire the number grew from 102 to 143.

Bora demanded that the Indian economy should be revived and suggested that the GST should be removed from the common people. Further the additional tax on petroleum by-products should be removed.

Bora also suggested that the corporate tax which was reduced should be increased again. Similarly wealth tax should be reinstated.
