India’s Longest Ropeway In City This Year: GMDA

GUWAHATI: The longest ropeway in India, connecting South and North Guwahati, will soon start operating in the city. The budget for the entire project under GMDA (Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority) is Rs 56.08 crore.

The ropeway will have two terminals – the lower terminal to be at Panbazar in front of Nehru Park and the upper terminal to be at Rajaduar Village behind Dol Gobindo in North Guwahati. The length is 1,820 metres with a travel time of approximately eight minutes. The ropeway is a twin track, single haul, bio-cable double reversible JIG back system type, with a capacity of 250 persons per hour and a cabin capacity of 30+1 (passengers+operator). There is a self-driven carriage and cabin rescue system for the ropeway.

Talking to The Sentinel, GMDA CEO Moloy Bora said, “The project will be inaugurated within the next two months. The reason we aren’t hastening safety – our prime focus. We haven’t compromised in quality, both in the cable car cabin as well. Both have been imported from Switzerland.” On the utility of the ropeway, Bora said, “During the rainy seasons when the ferry services are ceased, the ropeway will be extremely useful.”
