GUWAHATI: "Police is blatantly violating Human rights all over the State on the pretext of corona-induced lockdown and curfew," stated the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) while slamming the treatment on common people by the Assam Police.

The party pointed out that daily, people are witnessing on TV and social media the acts of 'exploitation' carried on by the police upon the common people. "How ethical is it for the police to unleash such cruelty on the people of their own State in the name of protecting law and order?" questioned the LDP.

Further, the party highlighted a few recent incidents of police brutality. "A special child was beaten up mercilessly on the streets of Guwahati, without applying any process of justice. Not limited to executing different kinds of physical exploitation on different people over the past, an officer of the police department has even gone to the extent of filming such incidents and publishing them on social media," said the party.

It underlined that recently a group from Assam Police publicly manhandled a doctor and some health workers who were serving the public.

"Assam Police is putting democracy to shame by cruelly attacking young college students in the name of repressing the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) agitation. That is, Assam Police bears no responsibility to the young generation of Assam. Now, when people are suffering from panic owing to corona, the excesses of the Assam Police is putting the people of the State under serious mental pressure," the party claimed.

LDP president Guno Gogoi has strongly criticized the autocratic actions of the Assam police. He mentioned that instead of being friendly to the people of the State, the attitude of the police is unfortunate. He called upon the Chief Minister to look into the behaviour of the Police and their widespread violations of Human Rights.
